In response to feedback from our school community about fostering a safe and supportive environment, we are excited to welcome four new Parent Lunch Time Supervisors to Four Winds School. Their presence strengthens our efforts to create positive connections and enhance student experiences during unstructured times like lunch and recess.
Why Have We Added Parent Lunch Time Supervisors?
Four Winds is a bustling Grades 5-9 middle school with 490 students, most of whom stay on-site for lunch. By including parent supervisors—valued members of our school community—we provide additional adult connections and create more opportunities for students to engage meaningfully during the school day.
Do Parent Supervisors Replace Staff or Provide Break Coverage?
No. The addition of Parent Lunch Time Supervisors complements, but does not replace, teacher or EA supervision during lunch or recess. Their role focuses on enriching the student experience by:
- Offering more opportunities for connection and mentorship.
- Supporting students in participating in organized sports, games, and activities.
- Creating a positive and structured environment to foster social-emotional learning.
The teacher and EA supervision schedule remains unchanged, ensuring that all students receive consistent support and oversight from familiar school staff.
Are Parent Lunch Time Supervisors Trained?
Our Parent Lunch Time Supervisors work alongside teaching staff and are passionate about supporting children. They are parents and grandparents within our school community and are casual employees of Sturgeon Public Schools, having completed both Criminal Record and Child Intervention Checks. Although they do not provide direct intervention with students, they work closely with staff to report and address any concerns promptly.
How Do Parent Lunch Time Supervisors Support Student Programming?
The supervisors contribute to our school’s goals by:
- Building positive connections with students through greetings and check-ins.
- Modeling and reinforcing positive behavior and respectful interactions.
- Assisting with recess activities, sports, and games, helping students engage more fully.
- Supporting literacy efforts during DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time by encouraging participation in Reading Buddies programs and quiet reading activities.
Each supervisor has a dedicated area:
- One stays indoors on the main floor.
- One stays indoors on the upper floor.
- Two supervise outside, covering the equipment shed, field, and playground.
Why is There a Lunch Time Supervisor Fee?
For the 2024-2025 school year, the $35 per student fee covers the cost of these additional supervisors, similar to transportation fees. This fee helps support the extra supervision required to provide safe and enriching programming—such as cross-grade reading buddies and organized recess activities—that go beyond the school’s operational budget. Both Sturgeon Public Schools and the Four Winds School Council approved the fee to enhance student experiences.
If you have any questions or need further information, please don’t hesitate to contact the Principal directly.
Thank you for your support in creating a safe and caring environment for our students!
